What Is HP Dynamic Security

What Is HP Dynamic Security

If your HP printer suddenly refuses a cartridge that worked yesterday — or shows messages about a non-HP chip, blocked supply, or “missing or damaged” after an overnight update — you may be looking at HP Dynamic Security.

This guide explains what Dynamic Security is in plain UK English, how it overlaps with Instant Ink and HP+, how ink and toner are both affected, and what to do next without risky DIY firmware work.

1

What HP Dynamic Security Is

Dynamic Security is HP’s name for cartridge authentication built into many HP printers. The printer talks to the chip (or electronic circuitry) on the cartridge. If it does not get the response it expects, it can refuse to print.

HP’s published position is that these printers are intended to work with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and that firmware updates can change authentication over the life of the printer — including blocking cartridges that previously worked.

What customers usually see

  • “Non-HP chip or circuitry detected” / cartridges blocked
  • “Cartridge problem”, “incompatible”, or supply memory errors
  • “Missing or damaged” after a recent update (see our not recognised guide)

Product packaging and HP pages often carry a Dynamic Security notice pointing to HP’s learn/DS information. Treat that as a live warning, not small print you can ignore.

2

Firmware Updates That Block Third-Party Ink

Dynamic Security is not a one-time setting. Periodic firmware updates can tighten or change authentication. Trade and consumer reporting through 2025–2026 continues to describe waves that stop some third-party and remanufactured cartridges (especially those using aftermarket chips) until suppliers ship a newer chip generation.

Practical takeaway: a compatible that worked last month can fail after an update. That is usually a chip-generation mismatch with the new firmware — not you installing the cartridge “wrong”.

Because of this, we differ in our usual advice to keep plenty of spare cartridges at hand. Instead, we'd recommend only buying when you're ready to install replacements, this way you'll always have the most recent cartridge version and avoid hassle further down the line.

Do not roll back or bypass firmware

We do not recommend rolling firmware back, installing alternate firmware, using chip resetters, or any other DIY unlock. Those paths are unreliable, unsupported, and outside what we will walk customers through.

If an INKredible cartridge that previously worked is blocked after an update, contact us. Our aftercare path is to provide a current chip-generation replacement or update, an alternative product where available, or a refund under our Firmware Guarantee — not firmware rollback instructions.

Dynamic Security vs Instant Ink vs HP+

These three get mixed up on support calls. They overlap, but they are not the same thing.

FeatureWhat it doesCompatible ink outlook
Dynamic SecurityFirmware + chip authentication that can change over timeMay work until a firmware wave; then needs current chip generation
HP Instant InkSubscription ink; auto firmware often required for the planSubscription cartridges; leftover Instant Ink typically stops after cancel — see Instant Ink / HP+ guide
HP+Setup choice that locks the printer to original HP ink/toner for life (account + internet)Compatibles generally cannot be sold against an active HP+ lock — not a seating fault

Many “e” suffix HP models are sold with Instant Ink / HP+ messaging. Check the model and how the printer was set up before assuming a compatible will work.

4

Ink and Toner Both Matter

Dynamic Security appears on inkjet (OfficeJet and similar) and on many LaserJet / toner families. Toner cartridges have chips too — a firmware wave can block third-party toner the same way it blocks ink.

HP’s public wording also distinguishes remanufactured cartridges that reuse an original HP chip from new-build third-party chips. That is a commercial/technical distinction, not a promise that any reman will always work after every update. Label type still matters; see our remanufactured vs compatible guide once published, and always read the listing.

What to Do Next (Safe Path)

  1. Note the exact on-screen message and your full printer model (including any “e”).
  2. Rule out simple install issues — seals, PULL strips, reseating — using the cartridge not recognised checklist.
  3. Check whether HP+ / Instant Ink is active — if HP+ is locked on, compatibles are not the fix; see HP Instant Ink / HP+.
  4. Disable automatic firmware updates where the printer and software still allow it (this is not always possible on Instant Ink / HP+ setups that require updates).
  5. Contact your retailer with the model, message photo, and whether an update happened recently. Ask for the current chip generation, Firmware Guarantee cover, or a refund — not DIY unlock advice.

UK warranty note: using a non-HP cartridge does not automatically wipe out your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act. Manufacturers may still refuse cover for damage they can show was caused by a non-OEM supply. Full framing: compatible ink safety & UK warranty.

Looking for Ink or Toner for Your HP Printer?

Use the INKredible website search and enter your exact printer model number. We’ll show listed options for that machine — and if a firmware wave has affected recognition, our team can talk through aftercare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dynamic Security the same as HP+?

No. Dynamic Security is authentication that can change via firmware. HP+ is a setup lock that requires original HP ink/toner for the life of the printer. A non-HP+ Dynamic Security printer may still accept third-party cartridges until a firmware change blocks a chip generation.

Will turning off Cartridge Policy fix Dynamic Security?

No. On some LaserJet lines, “Cartridge Policy” is a separate admin setting. Turning that off does not defeat Dynamic Security firmware authentication.

Can I roll the firmware back myself?

We do not provide or support firmware rollback or customers attempting their own firmware installations. Contact us for a current chip-generation cartridge or updated chip or we'll offer a refund if a previously working INKredible cartridge fails after an update and we can't get it working or replace with a working version.

Does this void my printer warranty?

Not automatically under UK consumer law. Damage attributable to a non-OEM cartridge can be excluded by the manufacturer. Read our safety & warranty guide and original vs compatible.
