“Compatible”, “remanufactured” and “refilled” are not the same product — even when the box looks similar. Mixing them up leads to wrong expectations about ink levels, eco claims and firmware behaviour.

None of these is the same as a counterfeit that fakes OEM branding. Selling reman or compatible honestly is lawful; passing them off as “original” is not.

The Eco Angle — Without Greenwash
Remanufacturing reuses plastic and (often) mechanical parts that would otherwise be scrap. That is a real materials benefit. New-build compatibles avoid buying high-margin OEM ink but still create a new shell.
Keep claims honest
We won’t invent carbon percentages or “planet-saving” numbers we can’t evidence. Prefer: remanufactured reuses OEM shells; buy from a retailer who labels reman vs compatible clearly; recycle empties through take-back schemes where offered.
When Each Makes Sense
- Choose remanufactured when you want shell reuse and a quality-controlled refill of a known OEM form factor — and the listing is clearly marked reman.
- Choose new-build compatible for everyday documents on printers that still take third-party chips well (many Brother, Canon and Epson ranges), or when reman cores are scarce.
- Choose OEM for critical colour matching, Instant Ink / HP+ locked printers, or when you specifically want manufacturer support routes.
- Skip DIY refill if you need reliable recognition and clean installs — a new chipped compatible or reman is usually less hassle.
