HP Instant Ink & HP+ Printers Explained

HP Instant Ink & HP+ Printers Explained

If you're shopping for a new HP printer, you may come across models that only work with HP's Instant Ink or HP+ services. These can usually be spotted by an “e” at the end of the model name.

The services can be convenient — but they also lock you into HP ink. Here's what that means before you buy.

1

What Are HP+ and Instant Ink?

HP+ connects your printer to HP's cloud. It typically includes smart features via the HP Smart app, automatic firmware updates, a longer warranty period, and a trial of Instant Ink. In return, the printer requires Original HP ink or toner for life and needs an ongoing internet connection.

Instant Ink is HP's subscription ink service. You pay monthly based on pages printed; HP ships cartridges when levels are low. Those subscription cartridges are tied to the service.

Important

Once HP+ is activated at setup, you generally cannot revert the printer to a non-HP+ state. You're permanently tied to HP's ink and cloud requirements for that machine.

How to Spot Locked Models

Most HP printers that require HP+ / Instant Ink end with a lowercase e (for example DeskJet 2755e, ENVY Inspire 7255e, LaserJet models with “we” / “dwe” style suffixes).

Example ranges that include HP+ versions

  • HP ENVY Inspire series (e.g. 7255e, 7955e)
  • HP DeskJet / DeskJet Plus HP+ versions (e.g. 2755e, 4155e)
  • Selected LaserJet HP+ models in the W1350 / W1390 / W1420 / W1490 toner families

Always read the product listing carefully. Non-“e” twins of the same range may still accept third-party supplies.

What This Means If You Want Compatibles

  • HP+ printers are not a good buy if you plan to use compatible ink or toner
  • Skip HP+ activation only works on models that allow a non-HP+ setup path — many “e” models do not
  • Prefer printers that clearly allow third-party cartridges if lower running costs matter to you

Tip: search your exact model on INKredible. If we don't list compatible ink for it, treat that as a signal to double-check Instant Ink / HP+ lock-in before you purchase the printer.

Checking a Printer Before You Buy?

Enter the exact model on INKredible. If compatible cartridges are listed, that model is usually a safer bet for third-party ink than an HP+ “e” machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every HP printer need Instant Ink?

No. Only specific HP+ / Instant Ink models — often marked with an “e” — require it. Many older and non-HP+ HPs still accept compatible cartridges.

Can I turn HP+ off later?

Generally no. Once activated, HP+ usually locks the printer to Original HP supplies for its lifetime.

What if my firmware blocks compatible cartridges?
