Short answer: good compatible cartridges from a reputable UK retailer are safe, legal and widely used. The risk usually comes from buying the wrong type (or a counterfeit), not from “compatible” as a category.

These words get mixed up constantly. They're not the same thing.

Compatible is not the same as counterfeit. A counterfeit copies the manufacturer's branding to deceive you. A compatible is sold openly as a third-party alternative, usually at a much lower price.

Are Compatible Ink Cartridges Safe to Use?
For everyday home and office printing: yes, when you buy from a supplier that:
- Lists exact printer compatibility
- Uses up-to-date chips where the printer requires them
- Offers a real guarantee and UK-based support
- Doesn't pretend the product is “original HP/Canon/Brother”
Quality-controlled compatibles are designed to fit, print and report ink levels in much the same way as OEM cartridges. They often contain more ink for less money — which is why multipacks are so popular.
What isn't safe practice: buying the cheapest unbranded listing with no returns trail; using third-party ink in Instant Ink / HP+ locked printers; or ignoring pull-tabs and air holes on install (a common cause of leaks or poor print — not a “bad cartridge”).

Do Compatible Cartridges Void My Printer Warranty in the UK?
Using a compatible or remanufactured cartridge does not automatically void your printer's warranty.
Manufacturers cannot wipe out your statutory rights under UK consumer law simply because you used a non-OEM cartridge. In practice, the common manufacturer position (HP's published warranty wording is a clear example) is:
- Using a non-OEM cartridge does not cancel the warranty or support contract in the abstract
- If a failure or damage is shown to be caused by that non-OEM cartridge, the maker may charge for that specific repair
That's a narrower claim than “compatibles void your warranty” — and it's the framing we recommend when a customer is nervous.

How to Buy Compatible Ink Safely

- Match the cartridge code on the product page to what's in your printer (small spelling variants like CLI-551 / 551C are normal)
- Prefer a seller with a long history, named UK address and a written guarantee.
- Read whether the listing is compatible, remanufactured or genuine — they must not be blurred
- On install: remove pull strips / air seals in the order the instructions say
- Keep packaging until you've printed a nozzle check successfully

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. New-build compatibles and remanufactured cartridges are lawful when sold honestly (not passed off as OEM) and when they don't infringe live patents. Counterfeits that fake OEM branding are illegal — that's a different product entirely.
Quality compatibles from established suppliers are made to work in the listed printers. Poor-quality unknowns and counterfeits are where damage stories usually come from. If there's an issue with an INKredible cartridge, contact support — don't keep forcing cleans or dispose of the cartridge before we've advised you.
Not simply for using them. Warranty cover for a fault caused by a non-OEM cartridge may be refused or charged, which is why buying from a retailer with its own product guarantee matters.
Especially on Epson patent-free designs, size, shape or chip position can differ by design. Different doesn't mean wrong — check the compatibility list and our Product Help notes.
Wipe the chip contacts, reseat the cartridge, and note the exact on-screen message and printer model (including any “e”). If it started after a firmware update, tell us — Firmware Guarantee may apply.
They're different: remanufactured reuse an OEM shell. They can be excellent value, but ink monitors sometimes show “empty/low” quirks. Compatibles are brand-new builds. We explain both clearly on Product Help.
