The Dandy says goodbye to printed edition

We are always sad to see a print version of anything disappear.

DC Thompson, the publisher of the world's longest-running children's comic, The Dandy, has confirmed that they would stop printing the comic on December 4th. December will mark the 75th anniversary of the famous comic book and the move to an online edition.

Ellis Watson, chief executive of DC Thompson, said: "On December 4th, we'll publish our 75th anniversary edition and now that the cat's out of the bag I can confirm that this will be our last print edition.

"It's what comes online then that will set the tone for the next 75 years. Dan has certainly not eaten his last cow pie. All of The Dandy's characters are just 110 days away from a new lease of life."

DC Thompson has currently taken their website offline in preparation for their re-launch later this year.

In its heyday, the comic enjoyed weekly sales of around two million. This number has depleted over the years and the last six months of 2011 saw sales fall to an average of 7,500 weekly sales.
The comic attempted to revamp their image several times in recent years but sales did not pick up.

When the comic was first released in 1937, it cost just 2p and came with a free whistle. Today the comic is priced at £1.99 and last year saw the release of the Dandy iPhone and iPad app for £1.49.

A special edition of the comic will be printed in December, along with a re-run of the first ever edition.

A book celebrating the 75th anniversary of The Dandy was launched at the Edinburgh International Book Festival this week and The Cartoon Museum in London will host an exhibition celebrating the 75th anniversary, which opens to the public in October.

Although the move to online content is a sensible one, it looks like we will just have to print the comic out ourselves once the paper version has disappeared from shelves.
